SBI PO Examination 2013 Exam Pattern,Scheme,Syllabus

Phase-I: Written Examination (250 marks) consisting of Objective Tests and Descriptive Test.

(i) Objective Tests (200 marks): The Objective Tests with 2 hour duration will consists of 4 Sections with 50 marks each as follows:
(a) Test of English Language (Grammar, Vocabulary, Comprehension etc)
(b) Test of General Awareness, Marketing and Computers
(c) Test of Data Analysis and Interpretation
(d) Test of Reasoning (High Level)
The candidates are required to qualify in the Objective Tests by securing passing marks, in each of the tests, to be decided by the Bank on the basis of the performance of all the competing candidates taken together in each test to a minimum required level for each category.

(ii) Descriptive Test (50 marks): The Descriptive Test with 1 hour duration will be of “Test of English
Language (comprehension, short précis, letter writing & essay)”.
The candidates are required to qualify in the Descriptive Test by securing passing marks, to be
decided by the Bank.
Descriptive Test paper of only those candidates will be evaluated who have scored qualifying
marks in the Objective Tests as stated above in (i).

Phase-II: Group Discussion (20 marks) & Interview (30 marks)

The aggregate marks of candidates qualifying in both the Objective Tests and Descriptive Test will be
arranged in descending order in each category and the candidates in the order of merit, subject to 3 times
the number of vacancies in each category, will be called for Group Discussion and Interview. The qualifying
marks in Group Discussion & Interview will be as decided by the Bank.

Final Selection:

The candidates will have to qualify both in Phase-I and Phase-II separately.
Marks secured by the candidates in the Written Test (out of 250 marks maximum) are converted to out of
75 and marks secured in Group Discussion & Interview (out of 50 marks maximum) are converted to out of 25. The final merit list is arrived at after aggregating converted marks of Written Test and Group
Discussion & Interview out of 100 for each category. The selection will be made from the top merit ranked
candidates in each category.
Results of the candidates who have qualified for Phase II and thereafter, the list of candidates finally selected will be available on the Bank’s website. Final select list will be published in Employment News/ Rozgar Samachar.

Staff Selection Commission Recently Revised the Scheme of  Combined Graduate Level Examination.

                                                   Scheme of the Examination

Different Tiers of existing Scheme of Examination for Combined Graduate Level Examination are as follows:
Tier -I -- Written Examination (Objective Multiple Choice Type)
Tier -II -- Written Examination (Objective Multiple Choice Type)
Tier -III -- Personality Test /Interview/Computer Proficiency
Test or Skill Test (wherever applicable).

Scheme of Examination for different posts will be as follows:

NOTE: There is negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in Tier-I.
In Tier-II, there is negative marking of 0.25 marks in Paper-II and III and 0.50 marks in Paper-I for each wrong answer.
Candidates are advised to keep this in mind while answering the questions.
3. The Restructured Examination, which tests the native intelligence of the candidates with reduced emphasis on mere reproduction from memory, has elicited appreciation from user departments, who now get the manpower in less than half the time taken earlier, and the candidates because of its facile structure leading to results in reasonable time.
4. The Commission has been undertaking post-examination analysis based on valid and sound statistical principles since 2011. Action taken by the Commission in cancellation of candidature – sometimes even after selection-based on post – examination analysis – has been questioned in a few cases. There has also been a suggestion from a user department, the Department of Personnel & Training, which recruits Assistants in CSS out of the Combined Graduate Level Examination, for re-introduction of descriptive papers, despite its rejection in the report of the 2nd ARC, on account of time taken for examination and lack of consistency, objectivity, and accuracy in evaluation.
5. While the restructured scheme of Combined Graduate Level Examination has proved itself in the last three examinations, the Commission has been considering, for some time now, incorporation of a mechanism, without prolonging the recruitment cycle and without any drastic modification of the existing scheme, to ensure that only bonafide candidates finally qualify in the examination and those taking recourse to mal-practices in examination, which has become possible with modern communication technology are screened. This will also obviate the need for detailed posts-examination analysis and wasting scarce human and financial resources in fighting litigation.
6. It has, therefore, been decided by the Commission that the candidates qualifying in Tier-II of the Examination, for Computer Proficiency Test and Interview for posts of Assistant in CSS, Interview for other Interview posts, Data Entry Skill Test for posts of Tax Assistant and document verification for other non-interview posts, will be subjected to a short descriptive paper of not more than one hour’s duration, with questions drawn from “English Language and Comprehension”, “Quantitative Abilities” and “General Awareness”. If adequate infrastructure with reliable real time connectivity is available, at least in the Regional Headquarters and Lucknow, the Commission will at its option, change this to an online examination. The examination will be qualifying in nature and will not be taken into account for determining the position of the candidates in merit order. This is expected to screen those candidates who might have been able to take advantage of unfair means in Tier-I and II examinations. The proposed short descriptive papers/online test will not only screen but deter those candidates who intend to use unfair means in examination.
7. As the number of candidates qualifying for the final stage will be in the range of 25,000 to 35,000 and also in view of the fact that Interviews/Computer Skill Test/Data Entry Skill Test take about 8 to 10 weeks, the evaluation of the additional qualifying paper, even if it is not administered online and is of descriptive type, is not expected to lead to lengthening of the recruitment cycle beyond the present one year. Analysis of performance of the candidates in the qualifying examination and other papers will also be facilitated due to very small number of candidates qualifying for the final stage.
8. The Commission’s decision is now placed on its website for the information of the public, in particular candidates intending to apply for the Combined Graduate Level Examination, 2013, which is scheduled to be notified on 19th January, 2013.

 A combined competitive examination for recruitment to Grade IV of the Services mentioned in Para 2 below will be held by the Union Public Service Commission commencing from 1st December 2012 in accordance with the Rules published by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation in the Gazette of India dated the 1st September, 2012.

 Union Public Service Commision IES./ISS - FULL SYLLABUS OF EXAMINATION

The standard of papers in General English and General Studies will be such as may be expected of a graduate of an Indian University.
The standard of papers in the other subjects will be that of the Master’s degree examination of an Indian University in the relevant disciplines. The candidates will be expected to illustrate theory by facts, and to analyse problems with the help of theory. They will be expected to be particularly conversant with Indian problems in the field of Economic/Statistics.

                                                     GENERAL ENGLISH
Candidates will be required to write an essay in English. Other questions will be designed to test their understanding of English and workmanlike use of words. Passages will usually be set for summary or precis.

                                                     GENERAL STUDIES
General Knowledge including knowledge of current events and of such matters of every day observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific subject. The paper will also include questions on Indian Polity including the political system and the Constitution of India, History of India and Geography of a nature which the candidate should be able to answer without special study.

GENERAL ECONOMICS-I
PART A:
1. Theory of Consumer’s Demand: Cardinal utility Analysis; Marginal utility and demand, Consumer’s surplus, Indifference curve Analysis and utility function, Price income and substitution effects, Slutsky theorem and derivation of demand curve, Revealed preference theory. PART B:
Quantitative Methods in Economics:
 1. Mathematical Methods in Economics: Differentiation and Integration and their application in economics. Optimisation techniques, Sets, Matrices and their application in economics. Linear algebra and Linear programming in economics and Input-output model of Leontief.
2. Statistical and Econometric Methods: Measures of central tendency and dispersions, Correlation and Regression. Time series. Index numbers. Sampling and Survey methods. Testing of hypothesis, simple non-parametric tests. Drawing of curves based on various linear and non-linear function.  Union Public Service Commision IES./ISS - SCHEME OF EXAMINATION

1. The examination shall be conducted according to the following Plan:
Part I. Written examination carrying a maximum of 1000 marks in the subjects as shown below.
Part II. Viva voce of such candidates as may be called by the Commission, carrying a maximum
of 200 marks.

The subjects of the written examination under Part I, the maximum marks allotted to each subject/paper and the time allowed shall be as follows:-
A. INDIAN ECONOMIC SERVICE

2. The question papers in all the subjects will be of Conventional (essay) type.
3. ALL QUESTION PAPERS MUST BE ANSWERED IN ENGLISH. QUESTION PAPERS WILL BE SET IN ENGLISH ONLY.
4. Candidates must write the papers in their own hand. In no circumstances will they be allowed the help of a scribe to write the answers for them. However, blind candidates will be allowed to write the examination with the help of a scribe. An extra time of 30 minutes for each paper will also be allowed to a blind candidate. An extra time of twenty minutes per hour shall be permitted for the candidates with locomotor disability and cerebral palsy where dominant (writing) extremity is affected to the extent of slowing the performance of function (minimum of 40 % impairment) in Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service Examination. However no scribe shall be permitted to such candidates.

Note (1): The eligibility conditions of a scribe, his/her conduct inside the examination hall and the manner in which and extent to which he/she can help the blind candidate in writing the Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service Examination shall be governed by the instructions issued by the UPSC in this regard. Violation of all or any of the said instructions shall entail the cancellation of the candidature of the blind candidate in addition to any other action that the UPSC may take against the scribe.

Note (2): For purpose of these rules the candidate shall be deemed to be a blind candidate if the percentage of visual impairment is forty per cent (40 %) or more. However, the extent of visual impairment should have to be corroborated by a certificate in the prescribed proforma from a Medical Board constituted by the Central/State Government along with their Detailed Application Form.

Note (3): The concession admissible to blind candidates shall not be admissible to those suffering from Myopia.
5. The Commission have discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all the subjects of the examination.
6. If a candidate’s handwriting is not easily legible, a deduction will be made on this account, from the total marks otherwise accruing to him/her.
7. Marks will not be allotted for mere superficial knowledge.
8. Credit will be given for orderly, effective and exact expression combined with due economy of words.
9. In the question papers, wherever required, SI units will be used.
10. Candidates will be allowed the use of Scientific (Non-Programmable type) Calculator at the examination. Programmable type calculators will, however, not be allowed and the use of such calculators shall tantamount to resorting to unfair means by the candidates. Loaning or interchanging of calculators in the Examination Hall is not permitted.
11. Candidates should use only International form of Indian numerals (e.g. 1,2,3,4,5,6 etc.) while answering question papers.

One hot afternoon while he was trying to keep awake and bemoaning his fate, a large bird with silvery feathers alighted on a rock near him. It was Kaha, the heavenly bird. "Have you no one to care for you, grandpa ? .. asked the bird. "Not a soul." "You should not be doing such work at your age," said the bird. "From now on I will bring you a big fish every evening. You can sell it and live in comfort." True to her word, the bird began to drop a large fish at his doorstep every evening. All that the fisherman had to do was take it to the market and sell it. As big fish were in great demand, he was soon rolling in money. He bought a cottage near the sea, with a garden around it and engaged a servant to cook for him. His wife had died some years earlier. He had decided to marry again and began to look for a suitable woman.

One day he heard the royal courtier make an announcement. Our king has news of a great bird called Kaha," said the courtier. "Whoever can give information about this bird and help catch it, will be rewarded with half the gold in the royal treasury and half the kingdom !" The fisherman was sorely tempted by the reward. Half the kingdom would make him a prince!

"Why does the king want the bird ?" he asked. "He has lost his sight," explained the courtier. "A wise man has advised him to bathe his eyes with the blood of Kaha. Do you know where she can be found ? .. "No ... 1 mean ... no, no ..;" Torn between greed and his sense of gratitude to the bird, the fisherman could not give a coherent reply. The courtier, sensing that he knew someting about the bird, informed the king. The king had him brought to the palace.

"If you have information about the bird, tell me," urged the king. "I will reward you handsomely and if you help catch her, I will personally crown you king of half my domain." "I will get the bird for you,"cried the fisherman, suddenly making up his mind. "But Kaha is strong. I will need help." The king sent a dozen soldiers with him. That evening when the bird came with the fish, the fisherman called out to her to wait. "You drop the fish and go and I never get a chance to thank you for all that you've done for me," he said. "Today I have laid out a feast for you inside. Please alight and come in." Kaha was reluctant to accept the invitation but the fisherman pleaded so earnestly that she finally gave in, and alighted. The moment she was on the ground, the fisherman grabbed one of her legs and shouted to the soldiers hiding in his house to come out. They rushed to his aid but their combined effort could not keep Kaha down.

She rose into the air with the fisherman still clinging onto her leg. By the time he realised he was being carried away, the fisherman was too high in the air to let go. He hung on grimly, and neither he nor Kaha were ever seen again.

The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children and the trees forgot to blossom. The only people who were pleased were the snow and the frost. "Spring has forgotten this garden," they cried, "so we will live here all the year round." I cannot understand why the spring is so late in coming," said the selfish Giant, as he sat at the window and looked out at his cold white garden, "I hope there will be a change in the weather." But the spring never came, nor did the summer. The autumn gave golden fruit to every garden, but to the Giant's garden she gave none. "He was too selfish," she said. So it was always winter there.

One morning the Giant was lying awake in bed when he heard the birds singing. "I believe the spring has come at last," said the Giant, and he jumped out of bed and looked out. He saw the most wonderful sight. Through the little hole in the wall the children had crept in, and they were sitting on the branches of the trees. On every tree there was a child. The birds were flying about and twittering with delight, and the flowers were looking up through the green grass and laughing. It was a lovely scene however, in one corner it was still winter. It was the farthest corner of the garden, and in it was standing a little boy. He was so small that he could not reach the branches of the tree, and he was wandering all around it crying bitterly. The Giant's heart melted as he looked out. "How selfish I have been '" he said, "now I know why spring would not come here. I will put that poor little boy on the top of the tree, and then I will knock down the wall, and my garden shall be the children's play-ground for ever and ever." He was really sorry for what he had done.

Each Question carry one mark

The questions in objective tests, except for the test of General English, will be printed bilingual i.e., English & Hindi.

There will be negative marks for wrong answers in the Objective tests. 1/4th marks will be deducted for each wrong answer. Candidates will have to pass in each of the objective tests.
The passing marks in each of the tests will be decided by the Bank on the basis of the performance of all the competing candidates taken together in each test to a minimum required level. Candidates are also required to score a minimum percentage marks on aggregate to be considered for interview. For SC/ST/OBC/PWD/XS candidates,
5% relaxation is available thereon. Minimum percentage marks on aggregate will be decided by the bank.

Note:
i) Other detailed information regarding the written examination will be given in the ‘Acquaint Yourself’ booklet, which will be made available to the eligible candidates along with the call letter for the test.
ii) Interviews : Depending upon the number of vacancies only certain number of candidates from amongst those who qualify by ranking high enough in the merit will be called for interview in the ratio of maximum 3 candidates for each vacancy.Candidates are required to score a minimum percentage marks (to be decided by the bank) in interview to be considered for final selection. 5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PWD/XS category will be available thereon. Final selection will be made on the basis of candidate’s performance in the written test and interview taken together.
